Knowledge and Knowledge Management in a Nutshell

What is knowledge? What is knowledge management? What is new about the concept? How can KM help make our life easier and better? Why do we need to learn the things we learned in our KM studies? What exactly are the roles of ICT and Web technologies in KM? …etc.

I have been pondering over these questions ever since I had embarked on my KM study journey. I have precipitated my thoughts and understanding into the simple diagram above. I am not going to explain too much about the diagram now, hoping that it could really worth a thousand words and you can see what I mean. Instead, I would like to use it as a bait (or brick) to attract your inputs (jade) about the questions I have mentioned.     Knowledege retention is effective or not depending on how enterprises identify critical knowledge and skills, plus their measures taken for implementing their knowledege retention plan. Take Toyota’s accelerator pedal issue, can we discuss something related to knowledge retention?

    TS’s “what is” is different from mine.

    I have throw 90% of the lecture thing out of my mind already

    To me, KM is a study of how to run anything in the long run, from people perspective.

    To run “things” in longer time span, “change” is unavoidable.

    Why change
    How to change
    and keep changes go on

    Why change is so actute these day is our society is changing in unprecedented speed. 10 years ago, it is still hotmail and ICQ, now I HAVE to use facebook, twitter, blog, msn, skype, google wave and more should be coming up.

    There is a tendency that older people give up to learn and causing failure as the old mine meet the real world from business sense.

    So I think it can explain Roy’s observation that successful business is running KM knowingly or unknowingly

    While there is already a link between the ‘Learning’ and ‘Goal’, I would like to include one more link between ‘Goal’ and ‘People’ as I believe there are cases that some people may has a goal that can drive the learning and action.
